Building toys are usually made of small pieces child or even adult can assemble to create anything the want. Older type / system of building block like Meccano and Erector set and made of metal piece that require assembly with nuts and bolts. Modern Lego bricks (circa 1958) and Mega Bloks (1967) are two very similar system with plastic bricks. Those bricks don't require assembly and have overtaken most of today's building toys market. Obviously collectors are looking for rare sets but sealed box are a must for those set as they assure the set is complete.
